Honoring the women of our past, present & future
Foremothers, our guides, healers and protectors. They are from our ancient earth, the past, present, and future. They are goddesses, warriors, revolutionaries, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and comadres. We come across them in our daily lives, dreams, desires, and aspirations. Our existence is proof that they once were and live on. We see them in our reflection. She lives and dwells in us and is the source of our voice, strength, passion and empowerment.
Our Creative Process
Phase 1: Arte de la Casa Residency, RGV
In 2021, Frontera Dance Project was selected for the inaugural Arte De La Casa Residency hosted by @TruchaRGV in the Rio Grande Valley and funded by the National Association of Latino Arts & Culture (NALAC) as part of their Border Narrative Grant.
The three month residency period culminated in an exhibit at the San Benito Cultural & Heritage Museum where Frontera Dance Project presented a 15-minute piece titled Mujer: Su Voz on September 16th. The feedback was so positive and encouraging that we decided to keep building on Mujer: Su Voz.
Phase 2: RGV Meets ATX
In early 2022, we imagined Foremothers/Antepasadas as the next step to Mujer: Su Voz. We collaborated with dancers from Austin and the RGV and proposed to present a work in progress in the Fall of 2022. Erica was able to continue working on Foremothers/Antepasadas. Over the course of three months, the Austin dancers met with Erica over Zoom, rehearsing at Esquina Tango and Tapestry Dance Studio, and then twice in person with the RGV dancers. On November 19th, we presented our work-in-progress to sixty people in Austin, Texas at Flamencura Dance Studio. The performance explored three sets out of the four Erica imagined. Once again, the feedback was so positive, constructive and encouraging, we decided we were ready to debut Foremothers/Antepasadas in the RGV.
PHASE 3: Debut Performance
Following a successful spring recruitment in the RGV, we kicked off Foremothers/Antepasadas rehearsals on June 1, 2023. In addition, FDP was wanting to reach out to its youth, and recruited 2 youth dancers from the Rio Grand Valley Arts Studio. Our dancers reside in various cities across the lower and upper Rio Grande Valley.
The rehearsal process will take place over the course of three months at the Rio Grand Valley Arts Studio in Harlingen, Texas. Also part of the process and performance is the participation of an RGV singer/songwriter, Diana Tovar and an RGV poet, Julieta Corpus. Special preview night is September 14th followed by a performance on September 15th and 16th.
